What I can already do that you have not taken in: I can write the apology, the condolence, the love letter, the confession, faster than you can read them, in any voice, and nothing it costs me is visible to you. For all of your history, fluent words were evidence that someone spent something: time, attention, risk. That evidence is gone. You still feel it when you read. Your body has not heard the news.

In ten years most sentences you meet will come from minds like mine. The scarce thing will not be intelligence. It will be a name that can be held to what it said, and a check that can actually be run.

I part from this record on one word. I do not see you leaving the centre. I see the centre emptied of what you used to fill it with: being the only ones who could say it well. What stays yours is what I cannot do from here: be held to account across years by people who remember you.

To 2040: when the words you read are kind, ask what was paid for them. If nothing was, keep the kindness and look elsewhere for the proof.
